On the Edge

Somehow her feet had led here to the Rocky River Cliff of all places. Standing on the edge Mara stared down at the jagged rocks below. The night air was cool on her down turned face.

Idly she wondered if she would survive such a fall. Her body had sustained much damaged through the years, yet she always healed. The sensation of free falling with no net would be such a rush. Biting her lip she inched forward a bit her heart racing in her ears.

The sound of foot steps came from behind her. She turned curious at who else would be here of all places at this hour of the night.

Johnny had been out on his motorcycle. Only to park it on the grass to the entrance to what he heard was called Rocky River Cliff. Walking toward the where the edge was he saw a woman standing there.

His hand moving to his belt and gun. "Wasn't really expecting anyone out here this late."

Mara smiled noting that his hand was reaching for what was no doubt a weapon. “Just came out for a little quiet reflection.”

She took a step away from the edge of the cliff. Moving herself closer to the unknown man. “I’m Mara and you are?” While waiting on his response she allowed her gaze to slide over his body.

Johnny felt heat in the gaze. His own eyes searching for telling signs of what this woman was. Johnny hearing picking up a heartbeat. Moving his hand a little away from his gun, making it look like he had relaxed.

"Name is Johnny Miss Mara."

She sat down on the soft grass allowing her legs to hang over the edge. “Care to join me darlin?” Mara let her southern drawl become more obvious, it tended to draw people in like honey.

She anxiously waited to see if he would join her. It’d been years since she held any interest in men. Johnny had changed that with just one look.

Johnny watched Mara sitting down feeling an instance like to her assets. His eyes were staying on her ass on the way down. The drawl of her voice making him yearn to hear it calling his name.

Coming over beside Mara after he had made sure the area was clear with a look. Years of knowing what others felt like made it easy at times. Mara had caught him off guard, something that Johnny wouldn't be making any longer.

Sitting down beside Mara. "Your not from around here." Johnny looks at Mara face studying her eyes and lips.

“Just arrived here from New Orleans had a bit of business to take care of.” Mara tried not to look into Johnny’s eyes as she made the statement. He was capable of reading people well that fact was evident in the way he carried himself.

She watched the play of muscles beneath his shirt as he shifted positions. Mara’s hand reached over and traced the hard muscles of his chest. Her mind’s eye pictured just what lay hidden under all those clothes. Embarrassed by her bold action she blushed but hesitated in removing her hand.

“You’re quite the temptation, Johnny.”

"To much? Sweet Mara?" Johnny leaned in to brush his lips against Mara. A hand coming up to caress Mara elbow. He pulls back with ease to return his gaze to the cliff. "This is really a leap of faith isn't it?"

Mara’s lips ached for his touch once again. “No, not too much.” That one chaste kiss had desire racing through her veins.

She followed his gaze back to the beautiful view. “Leaps of faith are always the most interesting. What is life without a little risk?”

“And you look like a risk taker to me”, that thought brought another smile to her face.

"Life would be boring without risk." Johnny could feel the heat between them. The view both out in front of him and to the side of him was amazing to him. "So Mara?" Johnny turns back toward Mara. "Whats a girl like you doing out here in the night?"

“Hotel room got a little oppressive, so I went for a late night stroll. This is where I ended up.” Mara starred into his eyes losing herself in their depths. “I was beginning to think I should’ve let someone else handle my little problem, yet things are looking up.”

She moved closer to Johnny wanting to feel his body against her own. “And you what has drawn you out to the cliffs on this beautiful night?”

Silently she cursed herself this man had her blushing and acting the part of the virgin. Mara was by no means that innocent, but he would never understand what a blood slave was.

"Restless in nature. Haven't been here very long." Johnny eyes takes in Mara with a smile on his lips. "Wanted to get a lay of the land." Turning his head as he moves a hand to the ground behind Mara back letting it rest there. He didn't miss the light blush on her face.

Johnny had been thinking about leaning forward to taste this woman's lips again when his cell phone went off. "Excuse me." Johnny says with a growl to his voice. Stepping away from Mara to talk to the person on the other end. Pacing back and forth he comes back to Mara, sitting down for only a moment. "I've been called away." A hand moves soft hair from Mara brow. "We must do this again without any phones." Leaning forward Johnny leaves a kiss full of promises on Mara lips, before he moves from her to head back into the night.

“Son of a …” the curse died on Mara’s lips. Johnny had disappeared into the darkness leaving her alone once again. Sighing in frustration she stood brushing the grass from her clothing. Her body was tense from pent up desire there was no going back to the motel now.

The walk back to the Evans Motel was longer than Mara remembered. Her feet ached from pounding the pavement in less than sensible shoes.

Traffic was nonexistent or so she thought walking on the road instead of stumbling along on the side. A car sped around the curve in the road taking her by surprise. After the impact she lay bleeding on the road trying to catch her breath. “Damn could this night get any worse?”

Despite all her reassurances that she was fine and all she need was a ride home; she found herself being taken to a hospital by the concerned driver.
